The Approach

Generic rehab is a gamble. We don't gamble.

Surgery is rarely the end of the story. The months after the operation are where outcomes are actually decided — by the quality of the hands on you, the precision of the programme, and how closely your physio is talking to your surgeon.

We work with Auckland's leading orthopaedic surgeons to keep that conversation open from the moment you're referred. Pre-hab to build the body that's about to be operated on. Post-op rehab tuned to your surgeon's protocol — phase by phase, milestone by milestone.

The Services

Six modalities.
One precise plan
for your body.

Every treatment plan blends modalities. You don't book "an acupuncture session" — you book a clinician who chooses the right tool, the right hour, for the stage of recovery you're in.

01

Physiotherapy

Hands-on manual therapy · mobilisation · manipulation

There are many forms of manual therapy that physiotherapists use. At Surgical Rehab Specialists we believe in a hands-on approach.

Manual therapy here may consist of deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation, manipulation, passive stretching and taping — applied with the diagnostic precision of a clinician who's read your surgeon's notes.

  • Deep tissue massage
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Manipulation
  • Passive stretching
  • Taping
02

Prehab

Pre-operative rehabilitation · strengthen, mobilise, prepare

The stronger, fitter and more flexible you are before surgery, the better the outcomes are after it. That's not opinion — that's the data.

We work with you and your surgeon to keep you as active as possible in the lead-up — within the limits of your injury — so your post-op rehab starts on the front foot, not in a hole.

  • Targeted strengthening
  • Mobility work
  • Cardiovascular conditioning
  • Patient education
  • Surgeon liaison
03

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Our specialty · surgeon-aligned, phase-by-phase

Our specialty. You'll receive a rehabilitation programme specific to you, your goals, and your surgeon's recommendations — built around the four phases of post-operative recovery.

We don't ad-lib. Every phase has measurable milestones, and we don't move you forward until you've earned it. That's how you protect the surgeon's work and your own return-to-life timeline.

  • PHASE 1Range of movement
  • PHASE 2Strength
  • PHASE 3Daily activities
  • PHASE 4Return to sport
04

Acupuncture

Western acupuncture · pain modulation · healing

A powerful modality for modulating pain and accelerating the body's natural healing. Our physios are trained in Western Acupuncture — so every needle has a neurophysiological rationale, not a guess.

Acupuncture works in three main ways: mechanically (knots, bruises and scar tissue mechanically released), chemically (increased blood flow, oxygen and circulation to the damaged area), and reflexively (stimulates subconscious reflexes, increasing the body's ability to cope with pain).

  • Mechanical tissue response
  • Chemical tissue response
  • Reflex response
05

Braces & Equipment

Post-surgical braces · ROM · support · return to sport

We supply a curated range of post-surgical braces and rehabilitation equipment to support your recovery — fitted in clinic, prescribed against your surgeon's protocol.

No mystery online orders, no guesswork on sizing. You walk out with the brace on, set correctly, and a clinician who can adjust it as you progress.

  • Range-of-movement braces
  • Support braces
  • Return-to-sport braces
  • Crutches
  • Moonboots
  • Swiss balls
  • Foam rollers
  • Taping
06

Scar Management

Massage · frictions · gel compression · cosmetic referral

Scar appearance is a real concern for many people after surgery. We use a range of techniques to improve it — including massage, frictions, acupuncture and gel compression.

If you're worried about your scar, we'll work with your surgeon to address it, and where useful, we have direct contacts with a number of Auckland cosmetic surgeons who are happy to review.

  • Scar massage
  • Friction therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Gel compression
  • Cosmetic surgeon referral

The Clinicians

Two physios. Both of them very, very good at what they do.

NZ Physiotherapy Board reg.

Amy is the founder and principal physio at Surgical Rehab Specialists. She graduated with a BHSc (Physiotherapy) in 2011 and has worked in the musculoskeletal field ever since, developing a strong interest in diagnostics, biomechanics, sports-specific physiotherapy and surgical rehabilitation.

After seeing a need for patients to be provided with quality care before and after surgery, Surgical Rehab Specialists was born. Amy has dedicated countless hours to surgical management — observing Auckland's top surgeons at work and reviewing their rehabilitation protocols — and has completed extensive post-graduate training in dry needling, plus her Certified Mulligan Practitioner qualification.

Outside the clinic she's a competitive horse rider in Showjumping and Eventing, keeps fit at the gym, is a keen foodie, and is Head Coach at her local pony club.

Field

Patrick is a high-performance, sports-specific physiotherapist. After fifteen years of Gymnastics at international level — two Commonwealth Games and five World Championships later — he has a pretty thorough idea of what the human body is capable of, and what happens when it decides to fail.

He graduated from AUT in 2011 with a BHSc (Physiotherapy), continued on to post-graduate study in Acupuncture, and earned his CMP qualification. After a two-year stint in London working across sports physiotherapy practices, Patrick returned to New Zealand — bringing a deepened experience in sports medicine, and serving as the NZ physiotherapist at the Rio Olympic Test Event.

His passion is high-level rehabilitation — getting athletes, weekend warriors and post-surgical patients back to performing at the level they came in at.

The Method

A four-phase return,
not a four-week miracle.

  1. i.

    Diagnose & align

Read your surgeon's notes, examine, listen. Set the goals that are actually yours — not generic milestones.

    Week 1 · 60 min consult

  2. ii.

    Restore range

Hands-on mobilisation, manual therapy, scar work. Re-open the joint within the surgeon's tolerances.

    Phase 1 · ROM

  3. iii.

    Rebuild strength

Progressive loading. Strength work that pays back into your daily life, not into a textbook.

    Phase 2 · Strength

  4. iv.

    Return to life

Daily activities first, then sport. We don't tick the discharge box until you're back doing the thing.

    Phases 3–4 · Return

The Fees

Honest about
money, too.

We're an ACC-registered practice, which means a large part of post-injury care is funded for you. For non-injury appointments — and any surcharges — we'll quote you up front when you book. No surprises.

Specific fees vary by procedure, session length and ACC eligibility. Ask at time of booking for an exact quote.

01

ACC-covered appointments

For injuries accepted by ACC. Surcharge applies on top of ACC subsidy — quoted at time of booking.

02

Private appointments

Non-ACC, including pre-hab, scar management, and elective surgical rehab. Full fee — quoted at time of booking.

03

Braces & equipment

Sold at clinic. Price varies by item. Some braces are part-funded by ACC for accepted claims.

04

Health insurance

Most major NZ health insurers reimburse physiotherapy. We can supply receipts and codes for your claim.
