I · Our Approach

A specialist practice, by design.

Founded by Amy Schischka — 2011

Surgical Rehab Specialists is a boutique physiotherapy practice providing considered, hands-on care for people before and after surgery. We work alongside Auckland's leading orthopaedic and general surgeons — translating their procedure plans into a recovery you can trust.

Surgery is, for many musculoskeletal conditions, an inevitable course of management. Our purpose is to make that process as painless and as predictable as we can — through preparation, education, and a calm clinical environment. Leading up to your surgery, we strengthen and educate. Following your surgery, we deliver comprehensive hands-on treatment and a rehabilitation programme designed by your physiotherapist in close consultation with your surgeon.

Clear communication between surgeon, patient and physiotherapist ensures you are well looked after at every stage. That is the standard we hold ourselves to — and it is why we exist.

Pre-habilitation

Stronger, fitter and more mobile before the operating theatre — starting recovery on the front foot.

Surgeon-aligned

Protocols reviewed alongside your operating surgeon, so your rehab is never working against the plan.

Hands-on care

Manual therapy paired with measured exercise rehabilitation, in a calm, private clinical setting.

II · Services

Six areas of focused, considered practice.

From pre-operative preparation through to scar management and a return to sport, every patient receives a tailored plan that follows their surgeon's recommendations and respects their personal goals.

Prehab

The stronger, fitter and more flexible you are prior to surgery, the better the outcomes that follow. We work with you, and your surgeon, to keep you as active as your injury allows — so you begin post-operative recovery on the front foot.

Scar management treatment
No. 06

Scar Management

Scar appearance is a concern for many patients after surgery. We use a considered combination of massage, frictions, acupuncture and gel compression — and consult with cosmetic surgeons in our network where a specialist review is warranted.

III · The Team

Two clinicians.
One standard of care.

A small, deliberately senior practice. Every consultation is led by one of our two principal physiotherapists — no rotating juniors, no rushed handovers.

Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP)
Post-graduate dry needling

Specialty

Surgical rehabilitation, diagnostics & biomechanics, sports-specific physiotherapy

Amy is the founder and principal physiotherapist at Surgical Rehab Specialists. Since graduating with a BHSc (Physiotherapy) in 2011 she has worked exclusively in the musculoskeletal field, developing a strong interest in diagnostics, biomechanics and sports-specific physiotherapy.

Recognising a clear gap — patients deserved properly considered care before and after surgery — Amy founded Surgical Rehab Specialists. She has spent hours observing Auckland's top surgeons at work and reviewing their rehabilitation protocols, and continues to invest in post-graduate training in dry needling and Mulligan practice.

Outside of work, Amy is a competitive showjumper and eventer, Head Coach at her local pony club, a keen gym-goer and a self-confessed foodie.

Post-graduate Acupuncture

Specialty

High-performance sports rehab, surgical recovery, acupuncture

Patrick is a high-performance, sports-specific physiotherapist. Fifteen years of competitive gymnastics — two Commonwealth Games and five World Championships — gave him a rare working knowledge of both what the human body is capable of, and what it does when it fails.

Patrick graduated alongside Amy from AUT in 2011, then continued to post-graduate study in Acupuncture and gained CMP status. He spent two years working in sports physiotherapy practices in London before returning to New Zealand, and was the New Zealand physiotherapist at the Rio Olympic Test Event.

Outside of the clinic, Patrick has a great passion for all things sport — particularly high-level rehabilitation.

IV · Patient Voices

Words from the people we've cared for.

A small selection of patient reflections — speaking to the calm, considered way our team works alongside Auckland's surgeons.

— Indicative copy. To be replaced with real patient quotes.

Amy's prehab work meant I went into my knee replacement stronger than I'd been in years. Six months on, I'm walking the dog again — and back on the golf course.

Patrick understood my sport. He spoke to my surgeon, mapped my return-to-play and held me to it. The rehab felt deliberate, not generic.
